It's no secret that the Chautauqua Lake Erie Region is a hub of outdoor fun during the summer due to our five lakes and the surrounding rolling hills and serene countryside. The warm weather of the summer months may be behind us, but autumn is still a great season to experience the countless outdoor adventures in Western NY. Wondering what to do first? Here's a list of our 5 must-do fall outdoor activities in Chautauqua County.
Hiking
Chautauqua County is home to a robust trail system that spans hundred of miles of trails county wide. Many trails offer magnificent views, chances to see native wildlife and wind through a variety of terrains including wetlands, hardwood forests, picturesque countryside and vineyards. Hiking during colorful foliage of fall only amplifies the natural beauty of the trails in the region. Trail options range from short 1 mile loops to longer treks such as the 24 mile long Westside Overland Trail, 19-mile Eastside Overland Trail and 17 miles of Rails to Trails. In addition to hiking, these trails are also used for mountain biking, horseback riding and birding.
Golf
Visitors and locals alike have been enjoyed golfing in the Chautauqua Lake Erie Region for over a century. Today, there are more than a dozen public courses, including some that are highly ranked and championship caliber, that many enjoy playing on in the spring and summer. Golfers can also experience playing their favorite Chautauqua County courses highlighted by the changing fall leaves. Many local courses also offer seasonal discounts and packages making fall the perfect time for a weekend golf getaway.
Boating
We all know that boating is one of the best ways to spend a summer day, but that doesn't have to end in fall! With the days still long and the weather mild, a relaxing boat trip is perfect way to take in the changing leaves on our five lakes during the less busy season. Each of our fives lakes has at least one NYS Boat Ramp as well as full service marinas on both Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake.
Fishing
Is there anything more peaceful than a crisp fall morning with a line in the water? The Chautauqua Lake Erie Region is known of their world class fishing and that includes fishing in the fall. During the spring and summer, anglers come from all over the nation for the chance to catch bass, walleye and muskellunge. During fall months, anglers also have the opportunity to reel in an annual run of migratory rainbow trout called "steelhead" on Lake Erie tributary streams.
