Title: The Many Colors of Galaxies: YOU Can Help NASA Decode the Cosmos
Date & Time: Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.
Location: Martz-Kohl Observatory & Online via Zoom
How do galaxies grow and change over time, and how can we tell from just a few lines of light? Join us as we host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) astrophysicist and NASA FINESST award recipient Sadie Coffin for a fascinating look into the history of our Universe.
During this presentation, Coffin will explain how unique light patterns, known as galaxy spectra, act as a cosmic time machine. By analyzing these features, astronomers can track how distant galaxies interact, evolve, and form stars.
Crucially, Coffin will share how you can become a part of this cutting-edge research. She is the founder and leader of Redshift Wrangler, a NASA-funded citizen science project that utilizes public volunteers to classify distant galaxy systems. Discover why professional astronomers need your help, how citizen science is breaking down academic barriers, and how you can contribute to major astronomical discoveries right from your own home.
The talk will be broadcast on the big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory, followed by a lively Q&A session. Weather permitting, the evening will conclude with guided tours and viewing opportunities through our premier telescopes.
Note: The classroom is heated, but the observatory domes are not—please dress warmly for the elements!
Cost/Links: All observatory events are free. For more information and the Zoom link, please visit martzobservatory.org.
