The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie,” on Sat., Oct.10, and Tues., Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.
Inspired by Rushdie’s memoir “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” this film explores Rushdie’s recovery following an assassination attempt during a talk at Chautauqua Institution. Through his wife Rachel Eliza Griffiths’ personal footage, which has never been seen by the public, the documentary follows the writer during his physical recovery as well as the recovery of his spirit and hope for the future.
NYC Movie Guru calls the film “an intimate and heartbreaking documentary.” RogerEbert.com calls it “undeniably inspiring.” The Daily Beast calls it “a stirring testament to both (Rushdie's) resilience and to freedom as a vital bulwark against the forces of extremism and evil.” Unrated, “Knife” runs one hour, 47 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
